Heard of Murphy’s Law? It states that “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”.
Simply put, “If anything can go wrong, it will. If it can’t go wrong, it will go wrong anyway” This is the basic premise of Murphy’s Law.
This past Sunday I took a drive to Entebbe airport with my wife. After she dropped me off as she usually does when I have a flight, I preceded to check in. “My Sudesh the flight will be delayed till 23:00 hours”, said the lady who was checking me in. I was supposed to set off at 20:50. I called my hosts and made adjustments.
I used the time to watch the Arsenal match which we lost. Read a book and finally took the flight. I had come with terms of having a long lay over at JKIA because my connecting flight was supposed to set off at 23:00 hours-the time I was flying out of Entebbe.
When I got to Nairobi it was midnight. I had dinner and took a nap from 3am to 5:30 am. Come monday morning ,the worst part of my travel was over. I mean what else could go wrong ? So I thought. I boarded KQ destined for Julius Nyerere airport in Dar es Salaam. I had scheduled meeting at 11:00 am which I had pushed from 8:00 am and subsequent business engagements throughout the day. After take off at 7:40 am, the pilot announced, “ladies and gentlemen we regret to inform you that we have a medical emergency on board and for such we have other head back to to offload the sick person. One of the people on the flight had gotten a heart attack.
With all this happening I stood chance of missing my meeting at 11:00 am since I had planned to first head to the hotel, freshen up and go for the engagements. I landed at 9:30 am. I had minimal time to my meetings and I wanted to keep my word no excuses. I dashed to the immigration section after landing, was cleared and headed to the bathroom after picking my suitcase.
I brushed, took a quick gentleman’s shower and dressed up ready for business. Jamil my driver took me straight to the meeting. He drove like a mad man.
I ended up being in time for the meeting and all the business engagements. Got to the hotel at 7:00 pm and the rest is history. As I write this I am in my hotel room in Dar after day two of work. I could have had excuses but I chose not to. Remember if anything can go wrong, it will. If it can’t go wrong, it will go wrong anyway.
Your boss will deny you a salary and your landlord will increase your rent. Your spouse or boyfriend or girlfriend will annoy you on the very same day you’ve had a tough day at work. You UMEME will be cut on the day your salary delays.
Things can go wrong but and they will from time to time. When they go wrong you have it make a choice either to judge yourself based on results of excuses.
You get to choose.
One more thing. Though I make it look easy, most people don’t naturally exercise critical thinking as I just stared.
